It has occured to me

It has occured to me that the items I'm knitting for the Dulaan project will not be warm enough for a Mongolian winter. Here in Sydney, the winter mornings we complain bitterly about rarely get colder than 4C. (35F) I cannot even comprehend cold weather of -40F.
However, I hope my hats and mittens will be useful anyway. Maybe Autumn wear.
I finished the first stripey hat and hope I have enough yarn for another. A great deal of this leftovers knitting is done with great hope that there is enough yarn to finish the items I start!
I don't think there will be much knitting today. I'm heading into Em's room to try to establish a clear path fromt he door to the bed. I've given up on the room looking like anything less than a bomb site.

Oh, I hear you. I'm used to warmer weather and it took me a couple of years to get used to the bitter cold winds that fly through here in winter. In fact, I still complain about 'em :-)

Donna, Greetings from cold Minnesota. If you line your hat/mittens with polar fleece I'm sure they will be warm enough.
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a daughter's room that looks like a bomb site!

Hi Donna, I'm glad you thought of this. I do think a few other people could be reminded of this issue as well. I'm in Vermont, and the temperature this morning when I got up was -10F. I'm in a warm house, and those people are NOT. I have a nice warm down parka if I need it and Sorel boots, but those people do not! I know cold, and I've been a bit concerned that some of the items people were making, although generous and appreciated I'm sure, will not really be warm enough on their own for a Mongolian winter. However, they can be wonderful for layering, and also, since you are good at sewing, if you line things (as I've done with a few) with microfleece, it makes all the difference. Sometimes it's not even the cold that's the bigger problem, but the fact that its compounded by the wind. Even the best wool garment, unless it's layered with something, doesn't keep out the wind. The microfleece is not expensive, and since you're so handy with the sewing machine it would be the perfect answer.
