The monkey is a hit :)
This is how I found them last night when I went to turn out the light.
And this is how I found the monkey this morning after Em had left for school.
I had a few requests for specs and such.
Pattern: From the new UK magazine, "Simply Knitting", Issue 3, but it can also be found in Fiona McTague's "Knitted Toys".
Yarn: Rowan Kid Classic in "Bear" and "Wild".
A relatively easy knit, lots of little bits, but they're pretty easy to make.
And now, we're going to have the first ever Random Knits Blog Contest. Yay!! Em can't decide what to name the monkey. He is very definitely being referred to as "He", however.
So, it's up to you guys. All suggestions welcome, and Em will decide the winner. The winner will receive a lovely, lovely tiny skein of Margaret Stove's Artisan Lace yarn in "Paua", and a Lace Scarf Pattern, also by Artisan.
The skein is heavenly soft, hand dyed laceweight merino. It's the cutest tiny little skein, but it has 300 metres (328 yards), which is enough for a lace scarf, I'm told. The yarn is still on it's way to me, the colour was chosen by Em, and I'll show you the actual skein as soon as it arrives, but here's one picture of the colour.
All you have to do is suggest a name for the monkey, and Em will pick the one she likes best.
Entries close at 8.30pm local time on Sunday 21st August, which is early hours of Sunday morning in the US, and late morning/midday in the UK and Europe.
So what are you waiting for? There's gorgeous yarn to be won! :)
You can leave a comment, or email me. Email is over there in the sidebar, under the photo of me :) -->

The beeeeeautiful monkey consists of almost 42 parts (I bet it seems like that for the you, Donna, who sewed him together *lo*) so I most definately think his name should be Arthur Dent (if you know the book series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy it also makes sense). He LOOKS like an Arthu to me! :o)
Have a great day!
Bettina from Denmark who has tried knitting up both fish and trolls for DD Anna who is 3 years old, but knitted toys are still not a hit around here. :o/
i think his name should be Ernest ... as in Ernest Hemmingway
very cute.. i adore monkeys !
Posted by: Elizabeth at August 16, 2005 09:29 PMI say Mason the Monkey !!!
Posted by: Christine at August 16, 2005 11:21 PMCute pictures, I can tell your daughter loves him. I had a sock monkey when I was little. His name was Jojo. He was my favorite!
Posted by: wool winder at August 16, 2005 11:26 PMLove him, Oliver that is!
Posted by: carla Hibbard at August 17, 2005 12:04 AMOK I got my daughter to help pick a name and she suggests Boots, no reason why... she's 7 and says boots is a good name for a monkey...lol...
btw.. he's adorable!
Posted by: Vicki at August 17, 2005 12:36 AMThelonius.
(As in Thelonius Monk)
I am going to have to get that book and make that monkey, he is so cute.
My littlest has a bunny (who is a girl) who she named Wain. She chose the spelling, and sometimes Wain the girl is called "He" I don't know why. Go figure. She thinks the monkey should be a Wain too.
Posted by: Alyx at August 17, 2005 01:40 AMIn honor of his being knitted and all...how about Mobeius..."Mo" for short. He is too cute...and so is she. :)
Posted by: Lisa in Oregon at August 17, 2005 02:31 AMAww, how sweet are those pictures!?! Very heart warming. :)
Seeing as the monkey was knit from Rowan kid classic yarn, why not name him Rowan?
Posted by: Samantha at August 17, 2005 02:40 AMThat monkey sure is well loved! Everyone has come up with great names! Em can name her monkey after my monkey whose name is Tapper Monkey because he taps. My other suggestion is McAlister because he looks like a McAlister to me.
Posted by: Evelyn at August 17, 2005 04:26 AMEm is so lucky to have such a great mom who knits her such awesome things like this monkey. How about Morrie the Monkey?
Posted by: monica at August 17, 2005 05:26 AMyou did a great job knitting....Peaches!!!! how's that for a name? i don't know where it came from, but i like it.
Posted by: lynette at August 17, 2005 05:28 AMI think the monkey is very cute. I also think it's great how your daughter is so careful with it. I like the name "Molly" just because I think it's a she and it's a great name for a monkey.
Posted by: sedie at August 17, 2005 05:36 AMI think she should be called Tutti in honour of a chimp of that name who lives at Monkey World here in England & loves to play. There are two photos of her on my blog (entry 13th August - Photos from Monkey World) & she's having fun in both.
From the Monkey World website
"Tutti is a female chimpanzee that was smuggled from the wild for the illegal pet trade in Saudi Arabia".
Posted by: blueadt at August 17, 2005 06:35 AMTutti needs a tutu so that she can dance with Em...
Posted by: blueadt at August 17, 2005 08:02 AMMy suggestion would be to name the chimp after one of sisters childhood toy chimps - "Sizweena".
I had a male toy chimp called "Sizwee" while my sister had a female toy chimp called "Siz-ween-a". The marrige was something to behold!
Sizwee & Sizweena brought much delight to our childhood and i am sure your Chimp has similar ears to those two!
Posted by: blueadt's DH at August 17, 2005 08:50 AMA monkey from Down-under? I suggest Dundee for a name. Sue
Posted by: Sue at August 17, 2005 08:54 AMToto the monkey was always a hit with my sons when we read Jungle doctor books when they were small. Toto was resourceful, ingenious and sometimes a bit scatterbrained. Always lovable. So how about Toto?
Jan
I asked my four year old daughter to have a look at him. she first suggested "Sally" but then I told her the monkey was a he so she changed her suggestion to "Thomas".
Posted by: Beth at August 17, 2005 09:34 AMHow about mem, so you have Em and Mem.
Posted by: Anne at August 17, 2005 09:43 AM
Your monkey is so cute. I think that I will have to make my 4 year old daughter one too. I think a good name would be Cuddles, since that's what you feel like doing every time you look at him.
I am SO glad you stopped by my blog, because it lead me here, to that fabulous photo of your daughter sleeping, and the monkey all snuggled up the next day. How about "Snuggles"?
Posted by: Mary Beth at August 17, 2005 10:37 AMI have had my fill of picking names in the last week, so I won't add in one here, but I wanted to tell you that is the most adorable monkey I have ever seen!!!!
Posted by: shannon at August 17, 2005 12:46 PMWhat a cute monkey! How about Merlin for a name?
Posted by: margene at August 18, 2005 02:53 AMHe is so adorable and I can see that Em loves him, I think he is Mokey (rhyme with smokey).
Posted by: Sharon at August 18, 2005 10:53 AMRemember the monkey from Pirates of the Carribean? They named him Jack. ( pic : http://brenda.teraflare.net/gallery/monkey/pic6.jpg )So how about naming your monkey after that famous monkey? =) Jack left a deep impression in many people coz he had the last scene exclusively to himself. It'll be cool to have a pirate monkey! (tempted to make one too..lol)
Posted by: Kessa at August 18, 2005 02:17 PMAs for an above post by Vicki who has a 7yo..Boots is the monkey in Dora the Explorer.
My 3yo suggested the name BEAR for the monkey! lol
I suggest Maxie.
Katt
Posted by: Katt at August 18, 2005 03:32 PMKaela looked at him - asked me who the girl was (she didn't meet her afterall at SnB), and proclaimed that he was "Munka"....what can I say....
Posted by: Donni at August 18, 2005 08:18 PMColor me simple, but I like the name "Lovey". It's obvious this monkey is already well-loved. =)
And if not that, how about "George" as in George of the Jungle?
Posted by: Rossana at August 19, 2005 12:48 AMThat monkey is SO UNBELIEVABLY cute!!!! You get a whopping gold star on your forehead for that one, Donna.
I suggest Milo. Milo the Monkey :-)
Posted by: Becky at August 19, 2005 02:36 AMWe vote for George! Does he get a yellow hat?
Posted by: Fiona Bun at August 19, 2005 07:33 AMHow about Cahoots, because it looks like he and Em will be getting into a few (cahoots) adventures together.
I think he looks a bit like Cheetah, from Tarzan.
Posted by: Katie at August 19, 2005 02:48 PMI like Darwin - it's from the wild thornberries but I think is a perfect name for a monkey who's evolved into being part of the family as well.
Em you look pretty cute snuggling up to that monkey - and wrapping him up on your bed the next day I'm sure gave your mum another 'how lucky am I to be this girl's mum' moment.
Posted by: Ailsa at August 19, 2005 10:29 PMBruno. Means dark in italian. Or if you are like my husband's family can mean "brown" as well. Seems to suit him, si?
And I must say he is adorable. And the shot of Em sleeping with him? Mastercard priceless.
Posted by: Lisa at August 21, 2005 02:21 AMWell, with those cute ears - perhaps Billy (as in McMahon). Or maybe Charles (HRH)?
Posted by: Susan at August 21, 2005 07:54 PMI just don't have anything to say. Not that it matters. Eh. I've just been staying at home doing nothing, but I don't care. That's how it is.
