Look! Do you see what I see?

100_6514.JPG

Edging! I'm finally up to the edging. Mind you, it took me two days to come up with an edging. Here's a closeup.

I made it up myself, which isn't what I had originally intended to do. I was going to use one from "Traditional Lace Shawls". But then I wasn't sure how copyright worked. If I do decide to offer up the pattern, am I allowed to use patterns from books? Even if I use it directly from the book, with no changes? What if the book is a stitch dictionary? As I don't know the answers to these questions, I thought I'd better strike out and do my own. It's not exactly what I wanted, but it's good enough that a newborn baby won't care!
I'm around half way down the first side of the shawl. And that means that I can start thinking seriously about what to knit next!
Just in the nick of time, a new Australian online store has opened! And Meaghan, the owner, stocks Cascade 220! And Lambs Pride! Which we haven't been able to get in Australia before. And some nice books and accessories, with lots more to come in the next few weeks. Go have a look! It's called Yarns Online.
So I placed an order this morning. I can't wait for it to arrive, so I need to get moving on this edging. I've ordered some Lambs Pride Bulky for this bag from Knit Picks.

You can find the pattern here.
I haven't knit a bag in ages, and I like this one, and I think I need to do something fun and quick to finish next. I also ordered some Cascade 220 for a hat and scarf set I've been designing in my head for Em.
So much for not buying yarn. I'm glad I didn't sign up with Stashalong ;)
I also ordered Scarf Style and some Clover bits and pieces. Aah, retail therapy!
I'll show you all when it arrives. And I plan to have a finished shawl by then, so I can immediately cast on.

Twinkie has a problem. Because she is rather voluptuous, she has been having difficulty reaching the food in the bottom of her bowl.
I'm serious, I'm afraid. Her big fat dewlap gets in the way, and she can't reach. So this is her answer.

You just tip the food on the floor.
I think we need to get her a new, lower bowl!

First, I am in love with the bunny, who eats quite similarly to our 16yo boy.

I don't think you can get in trouble for using a certain stitch pattern (I mean, now that Nicky Epstein has some books out, does that mean ALL cool edging are hers alone?). I just don't think you can say the overall pattern (shawl) is yours if you have copied it verbatim from someone else.

But I'm not a lawyer.

Congrats on your lovely edging. How long in total did it take you to make the shawl?

Posted by: Leeanne at January 14, 2006 08:50 PM

Hooray for edging! It's lovely!

The edging is perfect!! I'm not sure how copyrights work with stuff like that either, but I mean does the inventor of the Rib Stitch complain when people put it in patterns? *shrug*

I just downloaded that purse pattern ... less than 5 minutes ago. It's adorable! I am totally going to have to make one for myself. I wonder how it would work to use a smaller gauge yarn ... like to get a little cutesie handbag or something. Hmmmm. Either way, it's cute and I will have one. Maybe with walnut (wood) handles. It's loverly!!

You're already on the edging? I don't remember when you started this shawl, but it seems to have gone fast.

Cute purse. And someone in my comments recently said the scarf I'm working on "looks like the bag I just made." She must have been talking about this one!!

Should Twinkie be placed on a diet? It doesn't sound healthy to be that obese. ;-)

Great job on the shawl and edging! Looking forward to seeing the cute cabled bag.

Beautiful lace! You are going to love Cascade 220 and Lambs Pride. They are my knitting staples.

Psst. Twinkie! Try digging in the food dish. It'll knock out all the pellets and then you can make a game out of finding 'em all.

thanks for the link to Yarns Online...I thank you, my credit card and my DH probably do not. But why is it, when I have the opportunity to buy yarns I've drooled over for ages, can't actually decide? and also, remember the patterns I did the drooling over originally? Does this and other knitting mysteries perplex just me, or anyone else?
BTW the shawl is amazing. Oh and congrats on the award cobber!

The time and effort you put into it it something I greatly appreciate and will always cherish. This internet thing never ceases to amze and astound me. Thanks mate (the mate is again in reference to previously mentioned award!! hehe)

Hey the shawl looks brilliant!! Thanks for the link to yarns on line! They look great. :-) Stripey

I don't know how you can say that shawls make boring blogging...? I, for one, am enthralled. It takes heaps of perserverance and dedication to make something that intricate - hats off to you! Do you think the copyright stuff works on a percentage basis, you know like house plans. You have to change a certain amount of a house plan so as not to infringe copyright. I'd imagine if the majority of the design was yours then it wouldn't matter. Look at the number of patterns out there that are similar, if not the same.

Thanks for your kind words.

Wow you are already up to the edging. I can't wait to see it all done. Ohhhhh and a link to an australian on line store evil evil evil. I am never going to finish anything now. Twinkie doesn't tip her food on thee floor cause she can't reach it, she does it so you have something to do ( clean up her mess ;)

I like the idea of a new edge but giving alternatives from a book would be cool to.

Choices are always good.

Twinkie is cute!

Beautiful edging! As always, I stand here amazed. :-) And I am laughing uproariously at Twinkie. She's adorable AND can work out a problem. Cutie!

I love the edging, how many hours in total did it take you to complete? I wish you hadn't mentioned Yarn online i just placed an order with Wool 'n' stuff and Knithappens(20% off). Twinkie looks so cute.

Posted by: Kylie at January 15, 2006 02:46 PM

That edging is beautiful! I can't wait to see the entire shawl once it's blocked, and I'm pretty sure I'll be itching to get my hands on the pattern!

Twinkie,

I think you need an even deeper bowl so that you have to work harder to get to the food! My Bunny lost 1/2 a lb in 6 months just from us cutting his pellets back to almost nothing. He get tons and tons of hay and greens once a day... but the weight came right off after decreasing the pellets. He's much much happier now! You're still very cute though. :)
