So, I have a bit of a thing for old fashioned baby patterns. I pick them up on eBay from time to time, and recently I picked up this one.
So I thought I'd knit this little hat to send off with the shawl. It's in a 3 month size, which is about right, considering when winter and everything will hit, and the age of the baby.
I have the yarn here, and I'm ready to cast on. But now I'm a little worried that it's too old fashioned. Seeing as I knit a shawl, should I knit something a bit more modern to send off with it? I like old fashioned baby things, but I know that some people like more modern things. And I don't think this is too old fashioned. But as usual, I'm stuck in a welter of indecision.
So we're going to have our first ever Random Knts poll. You don't even have to comment, just click and vote.
Should I knit this baby hat, or go for something a little more modern? Vote now!

I think a lot of parents still like the old designs - they can look quite modern if done in different colours or yarns. If you look at Debbie Bliss patterns for example, they are essentially quite old fashioned designs redone in modern yarns and look wonderful.

I think the pattern, though cute, is a bit dated looking, but I think, as Mary said, it could be the colors. You said you already have the yarn. Is it too late to pick something a bit more current colorwise?
Posted by: jessie at January 20, 2006 08:57 PMIts cool! And with the tassel it will look lovely and near-silly on a baby (I like so cute its silly stuff on babies.) Go for it!
Posted by: suzanne at January 20, 2006 10:19 PMI love old fashioned patterns too. I often visit the 2nd hand market and ransack their stalls. I collected heaps to find a shawl pattern for my grandson. Go ahead and knit the cute hat. I knit cause I enjoy it. I wore Pixie hats growing up in Brisbane
Posted by: joanm at January 20, 2006 10:51 PMI voted yes for you to knit the hat because I don't think it's old fashioned at all and I think that's what you were asking. But, the shawl alone is a generous gift, so I think it would be okay not to send the hat too.
Posted by: wool winder at January 21, 2006 01:44 AMI say go for it, but use more modern colors (relative term, I know). I would use garden vegetable colors like tomato, carrot, string bean green, corn yellow, etc...
I just think pastels for babies is old fashioned. :D I knit my friend's baby girl a camo sweater (out of Koigu). It had a lace edging- it was actually really sweet.
Posted by: Lelah at January 21, 2006 04:03 AMI think it's a cute hat. What is so old-fashioned about it? What colors are you using?
Posted by: Evelyn at January 21, 2006 11:44 AMi too ,think this hat in brighter colours would be fine .. in fact its very cute .. and since fashion is cycling back to the 80's ..its proberbly back in ..
