Faina's Scarf.
Now you see it.
Now you don't.
Let me explain.
I love the yarn.
I love the pattern.
Together they just weren't working for me.
t dawned on me late last night that this is a very, very wide scarf. Allow me to demonstrate.
The pattern claims that using sportweight yarn (check) on 3.5mm needles (I was using 3.25mm) would give a finished width of 10 inches. I hadn't really thought about that.
Then when I had a good look at it, and then measured it, mine was coming out at 11 inches, unblocked.
I live in Sydney. Our winters just don't require a scarf that wide. So I put it aside and thought about it for a while, then this afternoon, I ripped it out. I was at row 100.
Sigh.
It will be restarted in the Wagtails Yarns 4 ply (Fingering weight) on smaller needles. I'm 40 yards short, but hopefully the smaller needles and finer yarn will make it go a little further.
However, I do have progress to report on the Bloomin' Feet socks!
I'm on the home stretch now! Better start gathering some goodies to cushion the package.

I dont like the really wide ones they bunch around your neck like a straight jacket. I think the lighter yarn should proove much better.
Posted by: metal and knit at February 22, 2007 10:18 PMI think you did the right thing. The scarf is beautiful, but if it's too wide and it's not what you want, it's obviously not right. I just recently finished a scarf, that is quite lovely, but it is very wide and as much as I like it, aesthetically, it's not functional. I'm a bit sorry that I spent all that time working on it for it not to be useful, but oh well.
Posted by: Wanda at February 23, 2007 02:54 AMSuch is life, I suppose. That gorgeous yarn will fair better with a different project and the scarf will fair better with a different yarn. Too bad you were already at row 100 though. The sock looks great. :)
Posted by: Samantha at February 23, 2007 04:05 AMlooks like you made a very wise choice - unless you had planned to gift it to someone, it would be silly to do so much work and never wear it.
Bloomin' Feet sock is lovely.
Have I told you how often my mother has attempted to knit this scarf...and the issues with finding an appropriate yarn. I sent her to the KAL maybe she will find something to inspire her.
Posted by: Kathleen at February 23, 2007 05:25 AMouch!
Posted by: jacqueline at February 23, 2007 06:01 AMI loved that scarf! You could have given it to me. I'll have to make my own now.
i myself do not like wide scarves too. makes me feel like i'm choking myself!! you are very brave!! i would have ask a friend to frog it for me!! hahaha :D
Posted by: Michelle at February 23, 2007 09:19 AMYou poor girl, after so much work too. Being in Oz too though I can understand your sentiments. The Clapotis is the only wide scarf type item I have knitted, but as it's more of a wrap than a scarf that's ok. I want to do the Lady Eleonora from Scarf Style, and that is very wide (and hopefully long) but again, it's a wrap that takes the place of a jacket or cardigan.
Absolutely loving the blooming feet. The pattern on the heel flap is very attractive too.
Oh Donna you poor thing :(
The socks look fantastic, just love the colour.
Posted by: Kylie at February 23, 2007 01:28 PMI think your pics are "broken". All I see are red x's. :(
Posted by: Jeri at February 23, 2007 02:23 PMThe socks look fantastic Donna. It's a shame you had to frog the scarf. But better to frog it now then finish knitting it and then never to wear it.
Posted by: Helen at February 23, 2007 07:40 PMOuch! Ouch! Ouch! Frogging is happening here too......... I am blaming the hot weather ;p
Posted by: Carol at February 23, 2007 08:39 PMI was so surprised to see that you had to rip out the scarf. It would have been too wide for my tastes too. The sock looks great.
Posted by: wool winder at February 23, 2007 10:52 PMThe frog pond strikes again! But at least you had the guts to do it--several knitters I know watched me frog something (I was out of my mind once, and started a queen sized bedspread, decided it was driving me completely nuts and I would never finish it. So I frogged it. In a public knitting group. In a library. I think the sudden gasps sucked a few books from the shelves.) and couldn't believe I'd rip out that much work. "But I'm not happy with it, and I know I'll never finish it." I think I need to look up my super spiral shawl and repeat....
Posted by: Cathy at February 24, 2007 01:20 AMThe scarf is looking so good too! But at least you're not blindly knitting on it until it's almost done. Ripping that would be sooooo much harder! I'm loving your socks - is that an eye of partridge heel? I think I know what my next pair of socks is going to be!
Posted by: Evelyn at February 24, 2007 03:59 AMOh no, what a bummer! Oh well, at least you'll end up with something you'll be happy with.
The socks are stunning!
Posted by: lobstah at February 24, 2007 05:20 AMOh Donna, maybe you should have finished it and given it to someone as a pressie who could use it more than us. With the humidity at the moment I am sure we wont be needing any winter wear for quite a while. I just adore those socks too, very pretty.
Posted by: Sue at February 24, 2007 08:58 AMI agree with sending something to the frog pond when you know forcing it to work is wrong. Hope you finish the pair in time for the Sock-a-Month KAL!
=:8
Well, damn. That is an eye-opener. I had no idea the scarf's dimensions were so huge. I'm less in love with it now. And I just ordered the pattern, too. I thought I owned it already, but can't find it, so I (re?)ordered it. Cripes, maybe I should consider doing it in fingering or laceweight yarn. I truly thought it was a little delicate kind of scarf, not so wide at all..
Posted by: Norma at February 25, 2007 05:48 AMI usually have trouble the other way, for some reason -- skinny scarves, when with my dimensions I need something wide! I'll have to keep it in mind -- it was beautiful. Of course, I'm sure it will be in the new yarn, too. And I covet the socks. (I think I use the word "covet" way too much in your comments....)
Posted by: Janet at February 26, 2007 03:57 AMBetter to frog it now than finish and never wear it. I've got a sweater upstairs in my closet suffering that fate. I just need to suck it up and take the fergockin' thing apart.Sigh. The socks are very pretty.
Posted by: elaine at February 27, 2007 12:19 PMI don't know much, but both of those projects are gorgeous. Where did you find your sock pattern?
