A random type of post today.
Good thing number one.
A parcel from my friend Jill.
All those wonderful US knitting magazines, Peeps, and gorgeous, gorgeous sock yarn. It's a 50/50 Merino Tencel blend, from Seacoast Handpainted Yarn. Aren't the colours just the prettiest? This one is definitely for me. I think I need more feet to wear all the socks I want to knit!
I was going through the magazines, when I noticed the "Ladybug" headband in the Spring 2007 Knitscene. The yarn they used was Zara, and I just happened to have an almost full ball that was stewing inthe leftovers box. So I whipped out some needles and got to work.
I love it when I can use up leftovers. Especially on something I like! Em has laid claim to this one, though.
Good thing number 2.
The Fern Garden Stole is blocking this very minute. By tomorrow it'll be ready. Yippee!!
Bad thing number one.
Yesterday morning, I wandered up to my local Tar-jay store, to pick up a coat from the Stella McCartney range that was released just yesterday. Coincidently, Spotlight was having a 20% storewide sale, so I stopped in there first for some fabric I needed for one of Em's costumes. Had a bit of a look about, then headed on up to Target. The store opened at 9am, and I got there around 10.30.
Gone.
The coat I wanted sold out in 15 minutes. The other coat I liked was there. One of them. In a size that's now too big for me. (Can I curse Weight Watchers now?)
$199 coats, gone. Sold out in 15 minutes. Plenty of Trench coats left, but I didn't want a trench coat, I wanted a wool/cashmere coat. Apparently many of the fashionistas from the Northern and Eastern suburbs came all the way out to the 'burbs to avoid the crowds, and scooped up all the stock.
No Stella coat for me! It was more than I should have spent anyway, and David threatened me that if I spent that much on a coat, I couldn't go to the USA. I need a good coat to go to New York in winter, don't I?
No doubt I'll manage to find something else I like, and at a lower price, but I was pretty bummed.
Bad thing number 2.
Emily wants a Blythe doll for her birthday.
Bloody hell! They cost nearly as much as a Stella McCarthey coat! And are about as hard to find locally, too. Don't think that one is happening, unless I trip over a ripoff somewhere. Now I know where the Bratz dolls originated, though. I found her a mini Blythe on eBay, but even that was $30 with postage, and it's only about 15cm tall.
Now I'm off to do some cutting and sewing. A friend rang last night to ask if I could design and sew a costume for her daughter. By Saturday.
Guess what I'll be doing for the rest of the week?
Comments

Posted by: 2paw at March 13, 2007 10:31 PMIf there is a better priced on in the US...let me know and I can forward it to you. Stinks about the coat. Her range is goregous!! Can't wait to see Fern Garden and lovely new yarn!!
Posted by: Kathleen at March 13, 2007 11:30 PMHa, the peeps and the yarn, they match!
Sorry you missed out on the coat.
Posted by: Restless Knitter at March 13, 2007 11:33 PMCute headband from Knitscene. Haven't seen that magazine before.
You are such a good friend to whip out a costume on short notice.
Posted by: wool winder at March 14, 2007 12:59 AMWhat sort of friend would do that? (A desperate one methinks).
Like I always say, a friend in need is a pain in the arse.
Lovely presents, and I like the headband too. Maybe wait until you go to the States and see if you can buy a Blythe doll there instead. It might work out cheaper. I cant wait to see the Fern Stole too, I am sure it will be gorgeous.
Posted by: Sue at March 14, 2007 09:25 AMCan't wait to see the Fern Garden Stole! Sorry to hear about the coat. Who knows, maybe they will stock up on it again? =)

Posted by: Michelle at March 15, 2007 10:06 AMHi Donna! Thanks so much for your comment on my blog. I had taken a peak at your Tweed Cardigan before and it is just gorgeous! About the sizing, I sent a note to the Jo Sharp address and they said it looks like there is an error in the sizing for the pattern, but they'll check it and get back. Best wishes.
Posted by: jacqui at March 15, 2007 02:34 PMThe Stella range is turning up on eBay AU - at double and triple the original price!!
Posted by: Nora at March 16, 2007 10:05 AMMost of the people who flocked and grabbed all the Stella stuff were "scalpers". Stuff started appearing on e-bay that very afternoon, often at twice the price they were bought for. That is NOT what e-bay is supposed to be for. Ticket scalpers get taken off, and even charged, but nothing was done to these people, they are just allowed to get away with it. It is so wrong. It makes a mockery of e-bay, and I can tell you that I am less inclined to look in there now for bargains.
Love the headband.
the Seacoast Handpainted yarn is divine - a definite keeper!
Posted by: Teyani at March 18, 2007 11:19 AMBummer about the coat and yes you need a very warm coat for New York winters.
You are so nice to make that costume. Of course you are a whiz at making them ... years of experience. lol.
Posted by: Diane at March 20, 2007 02:38 AMFern Garden is gorgeous! I hope this is one you keep for yourself. I like the Ladybug headband too and will have to find that pattern.
I'm sorry to hear about your coat -- what a bummer. I hope Em likes the doll you *did* find...why are dolls and toys so expensive now?

Can't wait to see the shawl! Good work.
And bummer about the coat. I was going to have a look but couldn't face the crowds. Surely they'll get more in!
