Thank you everyone for all of Em's lovely birthday wishes. I'm way behind on my emails, so I apologise profusely and thank you this way instead.
She had a very good weekend and was spoiled thoroughly. We had a big day out on Sunday, when we went into the city and went to the markets and Emily spent all of her birthday money. (It burn holes in your pocket, you know).
We caught the train into the city, which made an excellent knitting opportunity, thankyouverymuch.
I've started a new sock for my mother in law for mothers day. When we were visiting at Christams time she was very admiring of the fact that I was knitting socks, and that deserves a pair, doesn't it?
I started them through the week, snatching a minute here and there to work on them. The yarn in Koigu, in colourway P308, a gorgeous blend of pinks and browns. I had tried a few different patterns, but the only one I was happy with in this colourway was ordinary 3 x 1 ribbing. Here is where I was at when we left on Sunday morning.
This is how much I got done by the time we got home.
Maybe I should take more train trips!
These pictures were taken on my new mobile phone. My mobile phone died most unhelpfully on Thursday morning. I still had 6 months to go on my contract, but my phone company decided that I'm a wonderful customer, and because I give them so much of David's hard earned money, they let me have a new phone and a new contract at no extra charge. That part was great!
Finding out that I'd stored all my phone numbers in the phone, and they were unrecoverable wasn't great. So if I ever had your number, Idon't have it any more. If I may need it at some point in the future, you'd better email me.
Anyway, it takes nice pictures, but the colours are wrong.
That's far more accurate!
I'm a bit worried that I've made the cuff too short, and that the colours might be a little bright, but David assures me that they're fine. She does live in Queensland, where it doesn't get terribly cold.
While we were in the city, we took Em to the Supre city store. Supre is the place to shop if you're between 13 and 16 and shaped like a twig.
The store is huge. There are 5 levels of clothing, much of whihc is in dubious taste. Em was in heaven. David was prepared.
We were in there for more than an hour. Emily left minus a nice chunk of change, and I only had to veto a few things.
They have a little bit of fashion knitwear. I don't knit an awful lot for her anymore, as she has drawers full of unworn stuff that I've knit. But they had jumpers for around $40. She kept saying "Is that worth it?"
Of course, she wanted me to say "No, I'll knit you one." $40??
Instead, I said "Totally worth it! Buy it!"
Yes, I'm a bad knit mother.
In other knitting news, I have an almost complete Tea Set.
Only a saucer to go, and that's sitting beside me on my desk right now.
That's the pitcher at the back, and the lid for the pitcher at the front. The pitcher collapses if I put the lid on it right now, but I'm hoping a good starching will help that.
Faina's scarf hasn't seen much action lately.
I've just finished the second pattern repeat, which is supposed to be the halfway mark. I think I'll have enough yarn for an extra repeat, because it's looking a little short right now.
No Twinkie shots for a while, so here's what we did today. I'm in the middle of making Emily a new long tutu. Twink helped me cut the tulle today.
Well, she thinks she's helping, I guess.

Hmmm, Em, saocks, shopping, knitting...Twinkie!!! I truly believe Twink is a Labrador in mufti, she just does a lot of things The Labradors do. I can tell she is being ever so helpful!!!
Posted by: 2paw at March 27, 2007 07:39 PMSupre - not me so much...but some of my girls - heaven! try their factory shop in Marrickville (just behind Marrickville metro, think its open saturday - very cheap clothes - huge place)
Posted by: Jussi at March 27, 2007 09:01 PMI love the tea set it is looking fantastic :)
Posted by: Nic at March 27, 2007 10:53 PMOnly a little more than an hour in a store with five floors of clothing and a 14 year old with money to spend? Not too bad. I would have expected to be there half the day.
The tea set is coming along nicely. I'm interested to see how the starch works.
Posted by: wool winder at March 28, 2007 12:48 AMGlad Em had a nice shopping trip. Really 5 floors in 1 hr isn't bad at all. The tea set is cute.
Posted by: Diane at March 28, 2007 12:55 AMI think the MIL is definitely deserving of the socs. Knitting with Koigu is so nice. I don't think you're a bad knit mom. If you've knit other things for her and she doesn't wear it, why put yourself through the hassle of knitting more things. She had shopping money, why not let her buy what she wants? And if she wanted you to knit something for her, she could always ask you for it, right?
Posted by: Wanda at March 28, 2007 02:50 AMAww, your furry little assistant is so cute! And a belated happy birthday to Em -- sounds like you all had a very successful shopping trip!
Posted by: Sarah at March 28, 2007 04:50 AMIn that last picture Twinkie is really shaking her butt! Is she saying hello to my cat?
Posted by: monica at March 28, 2007 05:53 AMSorry I missed Em's birthday. Glad to hear you had a happy one Em, and that you had a great time in the city.
I'm sure Twinky was a great help. Photo's are gorgeous.
Gosh big difference in colour in the sock photos! It is a gorgeous colour - you MIL should love them. Seeing your photos of Twinkie helping with the tulle brought back lots of memories for me from when I was dancing back in the 1800s. The smell of tulle will send me off down memory lane. Very evocative. Ask any old (g) dancer and I'm sure they'll say the same thing. The smell of tulle .... and you immediately think of satin ribbons and toe shoes etc. :o)
Posted by: Terri at March 28, 2007 01:10 PMWhat a fabulous day for you guys. The socks, tea set, and scarf are coming along nicely too. And Twinkie? She wants to be a ballerina!
Bunny hugs,
=:8
A happy belated birthday to Em! She got to do what I had always wanted to do for my birthday as a teen, have a wonderful shopping spree with all new clothes! I'm sure she enjoyed it very much. :)
Sorry to hear about your phone. Technology is wonderful, but so unreliable.
Your tea set is amazing, and I know it's going to draw a lot of attention and ooohhhing and ahhhing. Can't wait to see that tutu as well. I always wanted one of those! I think Twinkie does too. :)
Posted by: Debby at March 28, 2007 01:29 PMt-shirt is gorgeous and i agree about supre but great prices - I look forward to keira shopping there on the cheap! thanks for stopping by my NEW blog!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: corrie at March 28, 2007 03:47 PMHappy (belated) birthday gorgeous girl! x
(Sorry Donna, I'm always late.)
I do like the tea set - very cute. But I was logging in to check the progress of the Fern Garden Shawl that I am totally in love with. You didn't set it aside did you? I does not look like a project you can knit on the go to dancing. I may have to make one too! I don't think anyone would notice half way around the world!

All women's clothing stores really should have comfortable chairs for the menfolk, don't you think!
Posted by: Rose Red at March 27, 2007 06:17 PMI quite like the tea set as it is - the wonky tea set. Very modern!
And excellent progress on the sock - you really must be a fast knitter!
