I promised knitting updates yesterday, and I didn't give them. I'm sorry. I was busy.
Cleaning Em's room.
For seven hours.
With help from David. We actually had to take the mattress off of her bed and remove the slats so that I could get to all the crap she'd stashed under the bed.
Seven hours, people. I kid you not. I took her to dancing at 2, and came home to tackle the mess. We finished at 9.15pm.
That was around an hour in, after all the dirty clothes had been removed. You can't see the stuff that's been moved out to the hall so there's room to move.
It is now clean. For a while, I doubted it would ever happen.
Onto knitting news.
The Shetland Shawl is stalled, but the first border is done.
I'm ready to start the centre square. So what I've decided is that if the two extra balls of cobweb yarn are a reasonable match, I'm going to use them for the centre square, and use the balls I have for the borders. So I'm waiting for the cobweb to arrive.
The Sirdar cardi is powering along, the fronts and the back are done, and I'm working on the sleeves.
I'm sure it'll be at the finish line soon.
And my current sock project, the Prisma socks are also coming along nicely.
These are for David, and are my portable knitting. Also heading for the finish line, then I have to decide which sock project comes next.
A big stash is not always a good thing, sometimes there's just too much to choose from!
There was also a sneaky project this week, but more on that next time, after I get another picture.
A side effect of cleaning Em's room was the four loads of laundry that appeared. I ran out of clothesline space, and the airer had to be pressed into service.
Someone thought it was fun.
Happy Mothers' Day to all! I got some lovely gifts, breakfast in bed, and a generally lazy day (apart from the laundry!). Although, after yesterday's epic, I think I deserved it!

What is it with girls and their beds? My daughter stashes so much stuff under hers, no matter how often I nag her about it.
Posted by: Mary at May 13, 2007 10:35 PMHoley cow!!!!!I thought my boys were good at hiding their mess!!
Great idea to wait for cobweb! A question, what the difference between cobweb and laceweight? I saw a pattern today that differentiated between the two that the pattern had different requirements for both!
Twinkie must love the out doors! Fluffa gets a bit scared and is a bit hard to catch but he will go back inside so we just watch him to make sure he doesnt go near Tilly(tied up) or find a hole in the fence!
You have just given me hope! My Purl has a mess that we tackle about every six months. I spend the entire time yelling at her, at anyone, at the world!! I know I was messy as a teenager, but golly lolly!!
It must be the season for knitting socks for one's husband. Yours are looking fabulous.
Posted by: amanda j at May 13, 2007 11:49 PMWow.. how did she manage to get all those things under the bed? The only thing that managed to go under my bed was my guinea pig.. We had a hard time getting her out.
The socks are looking great! So is the Sirdar cardi. Maybe you'd have finished one (or both) of them when the yarn for the shawl arrives!
Top idea about the cobweb yarn. So I'm sure you found heaps of weird and wonderful things you forgot about under the bed. So is Twinkie the clean laundry police is she.
Posted by: metal and knit at May 14, 2007 12:51 AMI had to giggle when I saw Em's room. I was the same way as a kid. I'm quite the opposite now!
Twinkie always gives me a laugh. What a mischievous little bunny.
You have a good plan with the cobweb. Here's hoping it isn't very different.
Posted by: Michelle at May 14, 2007 01:57 AMrolling on the floor laughing here - I did that about once or twice a year for my daughters - and now my oldest still asks me to come and help every once in awhile (she's almost 24 now) -
I remember being like that when I was young - good news is that we eventually stop being so disorganized :-)
Happy Mother's Day to you!!
I'm wondering how so much of stuff could fit under one single bed? hehe
Posted by: Mira at May 14, 2007 03:52 AMI feel your pain!
the cobweb is looking great - you so clever
Posted by: Jussi at May 14, 2007 06:33 AMhehe...we did this with Parker's room a fortnight ago! Only he was in massive trouble and we took all the toys out for him to "earn" back. Trust me a room with only his bed, books and colouring things stays nice and clean!! Oh he's earned back his TNMT so far!
You certainly deserve some quality knitting time now..
I should ask Lynette to tell you about the treasures she'd find in her teenage son's room. I'm glad Twinkie manages to find fun in everything!
Posted by: monica at May 14, 2007 09:01 AMMy mum used to MAKE me help her clean my room - you are one great mum! My cat likes to sit under the clothes airer too (and sometimes on it, although I don't know how she manages that!)
Posted by: Rose Red at May 14, 2007 09:16 AMYou will have many more years of cleaning Em's room. My daughter's room was always an absolute mess! The knitting projects look very nice. Love the sock.
Posted by: Diana at May 14, 2007 09:54 AMI think Emily is going to have to start cleaning her own bedroom, and doing it properly. I have to nag my 13 yr old every day to clean up the mess he puts on the floor, and under the bed, so at least we can move in there. It has actually been kept clean since we had a major overhaul in there for about 2 weeks now. I love the shawl, it is looking wonderful, and the socks look great too. Love the socks you received, they look lovely. I hope you have a better week, with not much cleaning to do.
Posted by: Sue at May 14, 2007 11:26 AMOooo! We did that on Good Friday for DD's room (she's 21). I had a cubic metre of washing - I kid you not!! Most of it would have been clean if it had been put away the last time it was washed - now it was dusty and dirt smelling!
The room's still not tidy and every day gets a little bit worse so we wonder why we bothered!

Have to laugh, my Dotter's room is a shocker as well.. clothes, books, papers, all mixed with yarn stash, Magic cards, rubbish, CDs, DVDs, and cosmetics. I've got to the point where I don't need the stress, so as long as I can close the door, I don't look at the mess or comment on it. Her room can take several *days* to clean out. A nice change of late (she's nearly 16) is that she's starting to be bugged by the mess (at last!!), and is cleaning it up a bit, by herself.
Glad you had a lovely Mothers' Day - sounds like you thoroughly deserved it!
Posted by: Jejune at May 14, 2007 12:06 PMOh holy crap! I can't believe you organized ALL of that mess -- you're amazing (and probably a nicer mom than I am) :o)
Posted by: amanda at May 14, 2007 12:07 PMMy eldest has a cabin bed so no mess can be hidden under her bed!
I have a day of tidying rooms planned today, the boys are getting new beds!
Love those socks you received, and David's are looking good too.
Happy Mother's Day!
Posted by: Fiona Bun at May 14, 2007 04:25 PMyou're a brave mom to tackle a teenage girl's room! my daughter always wanted me to 'surprise' clean her room - i was too much of a coward....you deserve a metal!
Posted by: debbie at May 14, 2007 06:14 PMGeez dont you hate those days when they come around. Where do these kids learn to stash the stuff... hmm I wonder. The charities love me when I spring clean.
Hope you had a nice mothers day.
I feel comforted that it's not only my daughter whose room looks like that-and yet somewhat disheartened that it can continue........ I love to see all your knitting-and of course Twinkie too ;)
Posted by: Leonie at May 14, 2007 10:41 PMAren't teenagers interesting?
Now that I am fully into my first "lace" project, and it is ten times less complicated than yours, I have to give you extra credit for taking on that shawl. It's going to be beautiful.
Posted by: jessie at May 15, 2007 12:32 AMYou are a better mum than I.
I am a mean mum. I make my kids do that stuff themselves. Then I come in for inspection. It usually takes several rounds of inspection, as I require the floor to be devoid of anything but furniture, even the closet floor (yes, they tried that ploy)....and the surfaces to house only those things that BELONG there...
But this reminds me. This week, the 10 year old's room needs to have that stack of clothes purged. It's on something (a box? a storage bin?) so it's not on the floor... but it's getting large enough that an avalanche is clearly possible.
I can relate to the messy room. My son just returned from college and his room now looks every bit as bad as Em's. I refuse to clean it, even though it's driving me crazy. For now he just keeps the door closed. I wonder if I could shame into to cleaning it, by posting a picture of it on my blog...probably not.
Posted by: wool winder at May 15, 2007 01:27 AMWe did the same for our DD last September & got rid of 4 binliners of cr*p & it took about 10 hours. Now I take a tip from FlyLady & ask her to set the timer & spend 15 minutes picking things off the floor & put them back where they belong. After that time she can stop & do what she wants. If she doesn it regularly hopefully it won't get too bad. It's still not how I would like it to be but it's a lot better than it was.
Posted by: blueadt at May 15, 2007 07:58 AMMan that reminds me of me not so long ago. My mum makes me do the nitty gritty with her, and the stuff we have hauled out under my bed in the past! I'm still messy, but these days its only my craft stuff (and occasionally uni) that takes up the floor, and suprise! nothing under my bed!
That shawl is going to be incredible! Happy Mother's day!
p.s. I tag you for the good ol' seven things meme.
Have fun!
She's a teenage girl, my mum used to tip my desk drawers full of school stuff outside. Same deal!! Nice knitting though, you have a good cross-section of things to choose from. MrsDrWho's kitten does exactly what Twinkie is doing, except she pulls the washing down!! Good idea about using the new balls of cobweb for the centre square too!!!
