Musings
Quick updates!
I finished the cardi this morning (Monday), after starting it on Thursday. If I could finish all my projects this quickly, I wouldn't have a stash! Here it is, unblocked.
It would actually have been quicker, but I had a hectic weekend. SnB was Saturday afternoon, and Em had a dance comp on Sunday. Both of which I always think will give me plenty of knitting time, but both of which fail me every time.
I had an unpleasant experience at SnB. I was talking about Twinkie to a friend, and she was asking if Twinkie had Angora in her. I explained that we didn't really know, but that she'd been sold to us as a dwarf rabbit, but at 5kg, she obviously wasn't a dwarf.
Someone I don't even know, who wasn't even involved in the conversation butted in with "That's eatin' weight!" and smacked her lips at me.
I was dumbfounded. I just grabbed my stuff and moved to the other end of the room where I fumed for a little while. Shelley, if you're reading, I'm sorry I walked away mid-conversation, but I was angry. Would a person talk about eating someone's pet cat or dog?!? Of course not, so why is it acceptable to tell me you'd like to eat my pet bunny?
Simply, it's not. It's rude, and it's enough to piss me off badly, and have me never, ever talk to you again.
In other (happier) musings, I'd like to ask a favour of a friendly US knitter. Knitpicks for whatever reason, refuses to ship to Australia. The cite reasons such as mail unreliability, but we all know that's crap. Personally, I'm thinking it's laziness, but whatever.
I'm in love with Autumn Rose. I want the kit in that colourway, and the pattern book. When I discussed it with Ailsa at SnB on Saturday, she decided she'd like to knit it too. In total, we're talking about maybe 25 balls of yarn and a book.
So we need a friendly US resident who'd let us have the parcel shipped to them, and who would then send it on to me. I'll gladly pay you for the postage via cash funded paypal, and there may even be a small thank you gift of some description involved. One of the colours is out of stock until October 10, so we'd be ordering in two weeks or so.
Anyone? Pretty please?

Whouf, I would've been furious, too! Some people just have a sick sense of "humor", if you can call it that.
(*Virtually cuddles Twinkie so she knows no one would ever let that happen, ever!!*)
Posted by: CraftyGryphon at September 30, 2008 01:48 AMI too would accept the package...just let me know...
Posted by: Sharon at September 30, 2008 01:53 AMOMG I would have been so angry! That's crazy. You know what you should have said... "Yeah, it is. And how much do your pets weigh? I'm having a dinner this Friday and need an idea for the main dish..."
Ugh, that's just so mean and stupid. Stupid mean people. Poor Twinkie.
Again, I'd be happy to help you with your shipping needs too, if for some reason the other offers fall through. :)
Posted by: Krystal at September 30, 2008 02:24 AMI know you don't need a dozen volunteers to send your mail on, but add me to the list of people who'd be willing to do it.
That woman sounds classless. I would have walked away too.
Posted by: sprite at September 30, 2008 02:33 AMI would be happy to deal with your order for you, if you haven't found someone. I would give you a link to my blog, but I actually secretly work for knitpicks!
Posted by: Robyn at September 30, 2008 04:38 AMUgh. I hate people like that.
Posted by: DKM at September 30, 2008 05:45 AMWow, that is one insensitive person! It's not like you are raising farm animals. I love Autumn Rose too. I thought I had seen the pattern somewhere else though. I have dreams of being able to knit so much colorwork successfully one day. It is hard to resist getting this kit though (thanks a lot!). I'll be happy to send it to you too if you're still looking for someone!
Posted by: Evelyn at September 30, 2008 05:53 AMWow, it amazes me sometimes how rude people can be!
I assume you're all set with your knitpicks order from all the volunteers you had...?
Posted by: Karen at September 30, 2008 07:43 AMjust to throw a spanner in the works...i had a sneaking suspicion it was even cheaper for australians to order the recommended jamiesons yarn from the uk ....even that knitpicks. but i am sure that being the bargain hunters that you are, ailsa and you have already done your research.
btw...i am so tempted to knit this myself, even more so now that i know you girls are!
Posted by: jacqueline at September 30, 2008 08:54 AMThe person making that comment surely has never seen your darling Twinkie...very ignorant. Don't think about it, just cuddle your bunny (is it just me or does that sound a little obscene?). Let me know if you need shipping assistance (I see all the wonderful offers already posted, I'm always a day late).
Posted by: Amy at September 30, 2008 09:28 AMI would have been furious too. Poor Twinkie, being blasphemed like that.
Good luck with the knitpicks!
Posted by: Michelle at September 30, 2008 09:42 AMSome people just don't think before they open their mouths. The cardi looks great.
Posted by: Melissa at September 30, 2008 09:58 AMOh, what a cruel comment.
Posted by: Suzanne at September 30, 2008 10:38 AMOh I am a bad mother then because I often look at The Labradors' back legs and say : Leg of Lamb!! And I say I could eat them up....
I have eaten rabbit when I was young but I would never eat Twinkie. I would not even consider spinning her fur/hair!!!
Too late she cries, but I am in the USA and I do have an oz bank account...
Nasty people wanting to eat your bunny!
Oh, sorry you had a bad experience at SnB - some people just don't think, do they.
I saw on Rav that you'd queued Autumn Rose - it is lovely - you'll be lovin' yourself sick in that baby!!
Posted by: Rose Red at September 30, 2008 03:56 PMUnbelievable.
I think I'd say that about her child, just to prove a point.
grrr.
and though I'd happily accept your parcel, and send it on, I'm guessing that you and Robyn are working out a deal...
While I agree it was a really stupid thing to say, I'll also say that teenagers say really stupid things when they're trying to be funny or different. That's what makes some teenagers so unlikeable.
Looking forward to the Autumn Rose, I think it's the no-brainer colour selection that makes me like the knitpicks version, it'd take me a million years to choose nine colours of the Jamieson's.
You could always get the original Autumn rose kit from here - http://www.camillavalleyfarm.com/jamiesons/ss420kit.htm without all of the knitpick hassles. And, not that I've ever tried the knitpicks yarn, the Jamiesons is possibly better quality...
Posted by: JulieB at September 30, 2008 06:49 PMwe have a guinea pig and i'm astounded by the amount of people who, upon learning this fact, feel the need to tell us (as in myself and my 9YO DAUGHTER!) that they eat guinea pigs in certain countries! yes, we know, but do you really think that is the first thing that needs to be commented on, particularly in front of a child?! DH's, one and all.
so while I'm equally fuming in response to your experience, I am, sadly, not surprised. People should learn what is funny, and what is just plain poor form.
or just keep their mouths shut.
Posted by: Kylie at September 30, 2008 08:11 PMPeople are horrible. I get really upset when people talk about eating rabbits, and I refuse to eat in restaurants that have rabbit on the menu. I've embarrassed a few friends by explaining why I am leaving to the staff, too.
I used to make jokes about eating children, but now that upsets me too ;)
I'm not sure I would have just walked away. I might have just let that person have it. Rude.
And you know I'll do the knitpicks thing. I might have to order another hank of blue to finish the last 6 inches of bind off of the shawl I'm procrastinating binding off the rest of the way because I'm afraid I'll run out of yarn. Hooray for long sentences! :)
Posted by: Restless Knitter at September 30, 2008 10:14 PMYou know you can always ask me to forward a package from Knit Picks. And you already have my mailing address. ;)
As for the woman--you showed far more restraint than I would have. She would have at least gotten poked with the pointy sticks....
Posted by: Cathy at October 1, 2008 01:48 AMWhat a rude cow. You should had asked if her kids were "eatin' weight"!
Donna, I'll be glad to have your stuff shipped here and send it on for you....just let me know!
Posted by: Debi at October 1, 2008 11:06 AMAlot of people have said that about Fluffa and Ive learnt to ignore them!
I love my bunny to bits and Hubby prefers to him as Mummys boy as he seems to snuggle to me more than the rest of the family!Ireckon its because I dont put up with any nonense! Rest assured no one knows the value of your furry companions more than yourself!
Love the sweater, cant wait for a fashion parade!!
Nice cardi & just nice for spring. I won't even touch kangaroo or emu meat let alone eat my own pet rabbit. Don't let such people spoilt you day.
Posted by: Ann at October 3, 2008 01:01 PMGreat cardi. Looks like you have a lot of takers already, but if you need a address for Knitpicks, I'm available. I live right down the street from the post office also. Same day turnaround to tempt you and I'm getting free orders from them in less than a week lately.
That person talking about Twinkie is lucky they didn't get stuck with a pointy stick right in the eye.
Posted by: Madame Purl at October 4, 2008 02:56 PM
How sad that she felt it was ok to make a joke of eating your sweet bunny. Maybe she got the hint though and realizes her mistake.
I'll be willing to accept your package if you'd like. That is a beautiful sweater and they have beautiful colors to choose from!
