Floriade
(Warning! Picture heavy post!)
Every year I think about driving down for Floriade, and every year I get distracted and never make it.
Well not this year!
It was a pretty crappy day, weather wise, but in a way that was good, because I think it kept attendance down a bit so it wasn't too crowded. It poured all the way down, and all the way back. . It didn't actually rain while we were there, but there's something weird about us travelling that highway, because every time we do, it pours rain.
But the gardens were beautiful!
And some gorgeous, perfect, tiny Bonsai.
This year's theme was "Films that shaped our nation", and all the gardens were based around Australian movies. Each garden had a little sign in front of it, explaining the garden, like this.
Which was quite fortunate, as some of the gardens were hard to see. One thing I'd like to see done differently is raised walkways so that you're looking down on the gardens, making them clearer to see. (And perhaps less muddy!!)
There were also some stalls there, selling a range of things, like soaps, and fudge. And, oddly enough, yarn! Belisa Cashmere were there, and there was a stall selling mohair knitwear, and some "Knit in a Night" scarf kits.
And I resisted! I even resisted the fudge! (Em didn't.) And the herbal teas, and that was possibly the hardest one of all.

Pretty! It's the wrong time of year for tulips here, and I have to admit--I like spring flowers better than fall flowers.
And the sign says "Strictly Ballroom"...I haven't seen that in a while.... Maybe it's time to see if the local movie place has it for rent... ;)

And Em looks very beautiful standing there in front of those flowers. :)
Posted by: Krystal at October 6, 2008 04:55 AMHey Donna
The flowers look just beaudiful! I always manage to kill bonsai - poor deluded friends gie me them from time to time but it never ends well... How are the grevillias going out the front of your place?
Posted by: nat at October 6, 2008 09:07 AMThe flowers look beautiful. How nice to have a yarn stall at the show too. I cant believe that you resisted it.
Posted by: sue at October 6, 2008 09:57 AMI got so excited, I thought you were driving to FLORIDA :)
Posted by: Debi at October 6, 2008 12:27 PMI agree with you - we went to Floriade [there and back in one day] last year for the Beanie Festival exhibition. The flower beds look good on tv because they take aerial shots but lack something from ground level. Raised walkways - what a great idea!!
Posted by: Lynne at October 6, 2008 05:48 PMThe flowers are so lovely & it looks like a great place. We have our King's Park with all the wildflowers & Araleun with the tulips but this year, I did not go to either one as the weather was too windy & wet.
Posted by: Ann at October 7, 2008 12:53 PMgreat pictures - especially the bonsai. How I wish I had a green thumb!

I still haven't been to Floriade - how slack of me. Maybe I should make an effort tomorrow!
