Moving along
Despite the ridiculous heat wave we're currently suffering through in Sydney, there has been progress on Autumn Rose. I must have rocks in my head starting this garment at this time of year! (Or wool in my head, as one friend so well put it)
But I can't help myself, I have to work on it. Perhaps not as much as I might if the weather were cooler, though.
I'm pretty happy with the way it's coming along. Even the inside looks pretty tidy!
I do have a question to ask of the Fair Isle experts though. Is there a "correct" way to finish the ends? If it all goes well, I was thinking I might enter it into the Easter SHow, but I have no idea if there is a right or wrong way to finish the ends off!

Donna...Autumn Rose is just beautiful...I'd never guess you're a fair isle beginner. I'm truly impressed.
Posted by: Amy at January 7, 2009 12:14 AMI don't know about "correct", but I weave them behind ("up" for a bit, then "down") whichever color is being carried in back at the time. That way, there's no way the yarn can possibly show up on the front of the sweater in the wrong place by accident.
And this is the *perfect* time to start this sweater. By the time you actually need it, it'll be finished! (I have one too many Really Warm Sweaters started in October and finished in June - then packed away and lost for the winter, when I need them!)
Posted by: CraftyGryphon at January 7, 2009 12:43 AMWow! That looks wonderful.
Don't know whether there is a "correct" way, but the Shetlanders just tie a knot. Of all the different ways, my preference is for the Russian Joint, but you might want to see how the TechKnitter, http://techknitting.blogspot.com/ does it.
Posted by: Marina at January 7, 2009 02:47 AMoooh, that is so pretty - i love how the colors come together! i've never tried fair isle, only color knitting i did was stripes and i had problems with the joining and carry-overs or whatever they call it. looking forward to following your progress. what, no twinkie shots?
Posted by: debbie at January 7, 2009 03:10 AMThis is your first Fair Isle? The stranding is perfect! Good luck trying to put it down (just one more row of the chart, I swear!).
I usually hide my ends in the seams, but I'm not too sure if that's the best way. But I know how to find out...
Quickly! To the Ravelry Cave!
Posted by: Andrea at January 7, 2009 06:18 AMBeautiful work, Donna.
Merrin, our convenor, and winner of fair isle first prize at Easter Show in past, told me ends need to be woven in - in two directions so that they don't wiggle their way out again.
Posted by: Lynne at January 7, 2009 06:49 AMEnds? You mean it's not knit in the round? *faints*
Posted by: bells at January 7, 2009 06:51 AMIt's gorgeous Donna, and as has already been said, your floats look perfect!
I was too hot to knit both Monday night and last night - I couldn't believe it. Think I am going to have to get air con in the new house!
Posted by: RoseRed at January 7, 2009 07:54 AMI have to say that your stranding is perfect. If mine looked that good I would think about entering it into a show too. The colors do look great together. You must be a natural fair isle knitter I think, but then everything you knit is great.
Posted by: sue at January 7, 2009 09:39 AMYour stranding does look great. I can't help with the ends as all I have ever made was the bear sweater I showed you yesterday. I will have to look and see if I even did the ends on it.
The colors are great together.
Posted by: Suzanne at January 7, 2009 10:29 AMwow. you are progressing very quickly. i've absolutely no idea how to do Fair Isle :(
Posted by: Michelle at January 7, 2009 10:36 AMI've always thought Claudine was a real knitting Goddess, but you are also fast approaching that status in my eyes. Wow. That looks fantastic. I can hardly believe this is your first Fair Isle garment!!
Posted by: Terri at January 7, 2009 10:58 AMLooks beautiful, Donna!! So neat. I'd like to know the right way to finish the ends too in fair-isle (no I'm no knitting goddesss!) I usually weave the ends through the seam, but that makes the seam kind of bulky, so that's probably not the way to do it. Weaving them in in two directions sound more 'right', though I can just imagine the amount of work... I guess a blue ribbon (and bragging rights) would be worth it :)
Posted by: claudine at January 7, 2009 12:17 PMThis is so lovely Donna!
I never knit fair isle (too hot!) but I know that some aficionados spit splice there ends so there are no ends!
Posted by: Debi at January 7, 2009 01:13 PMAbsolutely gorgeous (but is there any way to carry the ends up so there aren't so many - thats my knitting bleuch - sewing in ends!)
I can't believe how even and lovely it all is!
Posted by: Tinkingbell at January 7, 2009 02:04 PMThat is just gorgeous! Fair Isle is so addicting! I love seeing the pattern emerge. I've only done it in the round which means no ends. I am NOT a fan of dealing with those pesky ends.
Posted by: Evelyn at January 8, 2009 04:31 AMThat is so pretty - and I can't believe how fast you are going!
Posted by: Jeanne at January 8, 2009 10:33 AMThat is so pretty - and I can't believe how fast you are going!
Posted by: Jeanne at January 8, 2009 10:34 AMLove the colours in Autumn Rose - they look perfect together. As for steeking - you're braver than me - can see it makes sense, but don't think that I'd trust myself enough !!
Posted by: judy at January 9, 2009 08:47 AMThat is just beautiful work Donna - you could so never tell if that were your first fair isle project.
Posted by: nat at January 9, 2009 09:22 AMYou are doing a great job!! It looks wonderful.
Posted by: Donna S. at January 9, 2009 12:10 PMWow. This looks amazing. I especially like the rib at the bottom, the colours there really pop! Lovely back of work too, you could almost wear it inside out!
Posted by: Kate at January 10, 2009 08:51 AMDonna, that is beautiful and that is for starters.
Posted by: KSee at January 12, 2009 03:22 AMOOOH.
Autumn Rose is gorgeous! and that colorway...
covet covet...
It's time for another stranded project in my house. How could I have let myself forget??
Don't usually go for Fair Isle , but just had to comment to say how lovely the colours and pattern are , look forward to seeing how it progresses.
Posted by: Rachel at January 6, 2009 10:10 PMKnitting mittens myself which seems a bit odd in this heat.
