Easter Escape
So this year we threw Easter tradition to the wind and spent Easter Sunday at Taronga Zoo.
We saw the Elephants.
And the giraffes, who have some of the best real estate in Sydney.
And the aussie natives, who all know how to spend a Sunday.
But I particularly wanted to see the new baby Pygmy Hippo, and she didn't disappoint.
Her name is Monifa, (which means "I am lucky" in Nigerian, apparently) and she was super cute.
And thank you all for the get well messages. I got my voice back and all was well. And I discovered that I have low iron, and really low iron stores, so at least I now know there's a reason why I feel so tired and cruddy all the time, and it can be remedied.
In knitting news, Aeolian is driving me bonkers.
I'm up to the "Agave" chart. And the nupps. I detest nupps. More specifically, I hate 9 stitch nupps, when I have to purl them together on the next row. I thought that row was never going to end. So I have a catch-22 going on. I love working on Aeolian, I can't wait to work on Aeolian, I hate the nupp rows, and I don't want to do the nupp rows.
To help me with this dilemma, I started something new.
I'm using a Knitting Pure and Simple pattern to make a basic hooded tunic, in some Cleckheaton Merino Supreme I picked up at the ACS mill shop last year. The pattern is a little too plain for me, so I'm adding a cable down the sleeves and sides.
The perfect antidote to nupp frustration!
And to finish off today, we got some of Em's new dance pictures recently, and I thought I'd share.
Yes, she makes my back ache, too!

We missed the baby hippo when we were there a few days before you. And Em's photos - wow!!, especially the last one.
Posted by: Melissa at April 15, 2009 10:28 PMi have now decided I won't make that shawl. 9 stitch nupps are not for me.
And Em - WOW!
Posted by: bells at April 15, 2009 10:39 PMthanks for the elephant too too cute
and that dancer of yours WOW
You can power through the nupps, just make sure you're in the right frame of mind when you sit down for that row. I'm at the gazillion stitch end of a Neibling so I sort of know how you feel.
As for Em, I think you've spawned an elastic band!
You can do the nupps the other way round, I have learned this from Triinu Andreassen who is a shawl queen. www.tacraft.se There's not much to see now, but she has some patterns on Ravelry....
Anyway, you prepare the nupps on the backside on the row before, and then you KNIT 9 stitches together on the front side. Do you understand what I mean?
Posted by: Marika at April 16, 2009 01:52 AMI'm just tickled by the notion of Easter Giraffes for some reason. Thanks for sharing the zoo photos!
Also, I knew Em was a dancer, but I didn't realize she was a Dancer-with-a-Capital-D! I danced through most of my formative years, but never worked hard enough to be a Dancer. Go, Em!!
Posted by: CraftyGryphon at April 16, 2009 02:52 AMAmazing Pics!!!! Em is Bendy Woman! LOL!!
Sorry about the nupps. I think you're brave for doing them. Just look at those cute lil Koala's when you feel too anti nuppy! They're So adorable!!! :)
Posted by: Dawn at April 16, 2009 04:36 AMGosh, so many things to comment on..
Nupps - I'm with you, I hate them. Refuse to do them.
I like the cable down the sleeves. That's going to look great.
Em's pictures- yowza! Both of those are awesome! I'd be lucky to get my leg up half that high.
Glad your voice is back and that you know how to remedy the cruds.
Posted by: Restless Knitter at April 16, 2009 09:30 AMJust absolutely amazing! I was NEVER that limber even at her age.
Posted by: Rusty M. at April 16, 2009 10:33 AMYikes, nine stitch nupps. I guess that pattern will move further down my queue as I have at least one with smaller nupps to try first.
Great pictures of Em!
What fun at the zoo. I have been to two different safari type places in Canada but I have no memory of going to a zoo. I love Giraffes and would have enjoyed them.
Posted by: Suzanne at April 16, 2009 10:40 AMThe little pygmy hippo is just adorable. Your shawl looks beautiful. The top down knit looks very pretty. Yes Emily's photos make me think how I would never ever be able to pose like that and how flexible she is makes my body ache just thinking about it. I hope your iron levels come back up. My sister's iron levels were down to 2 last year which is very dangerously low. She now has iron tablets and eats kangaroo meat once a week which she doesnt really like, but it is better than having low levels. Some people just dont retain it as well as others.
Posted by: sue at April 16, 2009 11:38 AMi love those dance photos!! especially the red one!!! her body is so flexible!!!!!! i can't even touch my toes :(
Posted by: Michelle at April 16, 2009 11:42 AMYour daughter is a freak! How good are those photos.
I recently started Laminaria and there is this row where you Knit 3 together but with out dropping those stitches do a YO then K1 and repeat until you 9 stitches on the needle. The purl back row is also murder just seperating the stitches...so like you I love working on Laminaria. Hate hate hate those two rows.
Posted by: jacqueline at April 16, 2009 11:58 AMI was eyeing off the shawl after your last post, but now I'm tad iffy on it. I think I'll reserve judgement until you decide!
Remember to have lots of Vitamin C - it helps the body absorb iron more easily (the things you learn from pregnancy books...).
In the red picture Em reminds me of a dancer during "Cell Block Tango" kicking *behind* her ear! Phenomenal! I'm utterly jealous of her Blochs - I only just killed off my last pair :(
Posted by: Andrea at April 16, 2009 11:59 AMI am glad you are feeling better, low iron is very treatable, and it makes an amazing difference doesn't it?? Those nupps, I hate them too, I purl back with a sock needle or a wool bodkin!! It looks beautiful. Love the zoo visit, it's very Noah's Arky, Em is very bendy and the photos are gorgeous!!
Posted by: 2paw at April 16, 2009 12:11 PMLots of pink happening in your place. :) I'm feeling a bit the same about my current shawl project (the name of which I can't spell without going to check and Ravelry is down at the moment and I can't be bothered getting up to go look). Great pics of Em!!
Posted by: Terri at April 16, 2009 09:39 PMWow! Brilliant photography. Well done to Em too!
Posted by: Lynne at April 16, 2009 10:14 PM1. I wanted to start on Aeolian but if you're finding it hard... I won't even try hehe
2. Awesome photography and pics of Em!!
3. OMGosh I think the only time I'm able to spread my legs 180 is when it's detached from me!
I love seeing Em in her dance costumes. Those photos are amazing. I love how her hair suggests movement is the first photo.
I've been taking extra iron for a few years too.
Posted by: sue at April 18, 2009 07:33 AMWhat awesome photos of Em. Bet she loves them, it looks like she had fun getting them taken too.
Your knitting although its frustrating you it does look pretty.
Posted by: Leeanne at April 18, 2009 12:51 PMShould I admit that I love nupps? Must be the masochist in me.
The pictures of Em ... WOW!
Posted by: Kate at April 18, 2009 10:13 PMWow - the pictures of Em are amazing!
The shawl is looking great - I haven't worked on mine all week, but hope to get to it today. I'm not going to think about the nupps...
Posted by: Jeanne at April 19, 2009 02:19 AMEm is amazing. I love going to the zoo. Haven't been in years, but can see my getting there as soon as grand-daughter is old enough to atleast look excited about the animals.
Posted by: Annie at April 20, 2009 11:29 PM
Oh wow, those dance photos are amazing!!! Wow. Just wow!
Ugh, 9 stitch nupps - no wonder you need a distraction!
Love the zoo photos. Might have to go again, haven't been in years!
