Blocking
So several months ago, I knit up Kim Hargreaves' "Precious" from her first book, the "Heartfelt" collection. (Quite a few months ago - January!!)
It languished for a little while, because I wanted a wide black taffeta ribbon for the front, and haven't been able to find one anywhere. So in the end I had to settle for a single sided satin ribbon. Nice, but not really what I was after.
But I'm happy with the cardi!
Specs:
Pattern:"Precious" by Kim Hargreaves from the "Heartfelt" book
Yarn: Rowan KidSilk Night in "Starry Night" (Black), bought from The Wool Inn in Penrith
Needles: Knitpicks Nickel fixed circs in 2.75mm and 3.00mm
Beads: 8/0 black seed beads
Mods: The cardi was supposed to have beads all over, but seeing as the KidSilk Night has the sparkly silver thread through it, I opted out of that, and just put the beads on the edgings. As you can see though, it was kind of a wasted effort, because you can hardly see the beads anyway. Silver probably would have been better, although it wouldn't have been very subtle!
That was the only mod I made. I wish I hadn't waited so long to sew that ribbon on though, because it's too cold now to wear it, and it's going to sit, unappreciated for months now. Although Monday (when we took the pictures) was a beautiful sunny day - the kind of days I'd like to have all winter!
In other news, we had a big knitting weekend last weekend! On Saturday I did a presentation on blocking at the June meeting of the Inner City group of the Knitter's Guild of NSW. Scary! I think it went over okay in the end though. I was really nervous to start with, but it's good to do that sort of thing among friends! If you're interested, I've posted the printout of the tutorial over in the sidebar under "Blocking Instructions"->
(many thanks to the Yarn Harlot, who introduced me to string blocking way back when)
Earlier in the week though, I was preparing to block the shawl so I'd have pictures for the instructions. I put the shawl in to soak, then laid out the white fabric so I'd have some contrast in the background. When I came down the hall a bit later to drain off the shawl, I found someone checking out the preparations.
Caught! She knows very well she isn't supposed to be in the bedrooms, let alone up on the bed. In fact, once she realised that she'd been caught, she moved faster than I've ever seen her move!

Another great KH design. It looks great!
Funny Twinkie! My Nelly on the other hand is very happily sleeping on my fresh;y washed handknitted socks (5 pairs!) laid out to dry on aflat clothes airer. She's even rubbing it in by snoring!
Posted by: Rose Red at June 18, 2010 04:20 AMHmm, I didn't know bunnys could get up on a bed without help.
The sweater is very pretty!
Posted by: Suzanne at June 18, 2010 10:00 AMYour cardi is very nice Donna! How funny that she got up on the bed, how did she manage that. It makes you wonder what else she gets up too when your not home, lol!
Posted by: sue at June 18, 2010 10:34 AMI was stunned to see Twinkie on the bed but I guess rabbits can jump!
The cardi looks lovely but not really appropriate for this weather.
Congrats on taking up the challenge of presenting a tutorial at KG. I'm sure it went very well.
Posted by: Lynne at June 18, 2010 11:19 AMbad twinkie. cute tho! at least you know she can actually jump and move when she wants to! your blocking tutorial was really great, you are a natural presenter, and i learnt heaps. and that is a real shame we havent seen precious before, because its just stunning on you! next season!
Posted by: drk at June 18, 2010 12:57 PMLOL,go Twinkie!! Fluffa landed on my lap this morning,he got sick of waiting for his pat..Love the new cardie!!!Yes I think silver beads would have looked great but it still very nice anyway! I tried to put some on a handspun shawl last weekend and broke both of the threaders and they didnt look much anyhow so have gone plain!
Whats on your knitting list to do now?! I have tooo many and cant make my mind up!
Very precious....it looks really nice.
Posted by: Annie at June 19, 2010 06:03 PMThere must be something in the air. Twinkies Northern Michigan Twin Gigi has been going rogue this week sneaking into the bedroom and getting into things she knows shes not aloud to do. Rabbits will often jump up on things but then wonder how the heck to get down.
Love the cardi, great choice in the Rowan Kidsilk. Another one to add to my long list of projects.
I think the beads are a perfectly lovely, subtle edging, but you're right - I wouldn't bother working them over the whole piece! The kidsilk haze night gives the right amount of snap.
Twinkie is a crack-up, yeah?
